As part of the regular
curriculum for students
of the department, the
Habitat Unit offers
series of lectures,
projects and seminars
addressing the
following subjects:

Major Topics:

Historical and contemporary patterns of urbanization in Africa, Asia and Latin America, globalization, mega cities, informal development, sustainable urban development;

Urban planning and housing: strategies of physical planning (e. g. strategic planning, action planning); housing improvement strategies (sites-and-services, upgrading, regularization);

Vernacular and traditional architecture, cultural change, cultural identity in architecture, anthropology of architecture;

Contemporary architecture in countries of the South, climatic and social aspects of building.

 

The Habitat Unit runs design studios and projects on various themes, frequently in combination with fieldwork abroad. Housing and urban development issues of Berlin are also addressed. Study trips are organized in cooperation with partner institutions. They usually involve workshops with students from partner universities and serve as field trips to prepare for course work in Berlin. Experts and NGOs from the respective countries are also involved.
