Study trips
Exkursionen
Study trips are organized to carry out
field work and work- shops in connection with teaching and research
projects
of the Habitat Unit.
They are arranged in
collaboration with
counterpart institutions
abroad and involve
academics, local
architects, planners
and NGOs.

May 02-12, 2008: Student Competition and Workshop in Damascus, Syria
Damascus is this year’s cultural capital of the Arabic world. For this reason Damascus University has invited the Habitat Unit to a workshop and design competition which is partly funded by DAAD. The workshop will focus on urban visions, scenarios and concepts for Damascus in the year 2025. The study trip is part of a semester project. There are few places still available for participation. New application deadline is the 9th of April 2008.

April 01- 15, 2008:
Workshop in Leh, Ladakh, India
This workshop is organized in cooperation with the L.O.T.I.
(Leh Old Town Intiative). The work will focus on the analysis of
traditional building construction and settlement patterns. This
study trip is part of a 2-semester project.Organization and supervision:
André Alexander (THF) and Prof. Herrle.
March 01- 31, 2008: Workshop on Experimental Building Construction:
"A Baked-insitu Mud House in Pondicherry, India". This
prototyp house follows a technology poineered by Ray Meeker to bake
life-sized mud houses insitu. Houses are stabilized by converting
them to ceramic, thereby making them water restistant and lasting.

October 2007: DAAD-funded field trip to Santiago, Chile. 10-day
workshop at the PUC, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile as
the first part of a 2-semester project on building with wood.

August 2006: Study trip to South Africa in connection with the
seminar on housing and urban development in summer 2006. Organized
by Dipl.-Ing. Astrid Ley in cooperation with Witwatersrand University,
Johannesburg.
March 2006: Study trip to Mumbai, India, research abolut
pavement dwellers and relocation projects of SPARC as part of a two
semester project on "Housing Solutions for Mumbai", in cooperation
with SPARC, Organized by Prof. Peter Herrle and Dipl.-Ing. Alexander
Jachnow.
March 2006: Study trip to Jhabua, India as part of a two
semester project on a school building with hostel for 750 children, led by
Dipl.-Ing. Francis Kéré.
February 2006: Study trip to Istanbul. Research and workshop on
the redevelopment of the Galata Port together with students from
Istanbul and from Budapest. The trip is part of a two semester
project on "Traffic Space" and has been co-organized by the Halic
University and Dipl.-Ing. Paola Alfaro d'Alencon from the Habitat
Unit.

2005: Study trip to Fortaleza, Brazil. Research on informal
settlements and housing delivery, in cooperation with the DED and
local NGOs, led by MA Alexander Jachnow.
March
2005: Study trip to Algeria. Research on urban conservation
and heritage management in Cherchell in cooperation with EPAU (Ecole
Polytechnique d’Architecture et Urbanisme) Algiers. Organized
by Dr.Sonja Nebel and Dr. Mariam Chabou, Algiers.

2005: Study trip to Tashkent, Buchara and
Samarkand. Field studies on urban conservation in co-operation with
the Tashkent Architectural Building Institute (TACI) and UNESCO.
Organized by MA Astrid Ley.

2005: Study strip to Burkina Faso.
Research on Urban Development in general and specially on Informal
Housings problems in Ouagadougou.
The Study also focuses on finding solutions to create sustainable
Architecture. In otherwise how to create Urbanisation and Architecture
based on the Climate, the local Economy and Culture in this third
world Country?
The Study trip is organized by Diébédo Francis Kéré.

in a selected area of Istanbul. Student’s Workshop in cooperation
with the Istanbul Technical University. Organized by Dr. Sonja Nebel,
Stephanus Schmitz, Sinan Ozgen.

2004: Study trip to Syria/Libanon. Research on tendencies of
urban conservation and urban development. Workshop on “building
in existing fabric” in Damascus or/and Aleppo/Syria. Organized
by Prof. Dr.Ghassan El Badwan (DAAD visiting scholar).

2004: Study trip to Cape Town, South Africa. Studies and proposals
for the public spaces in Nyanga, in cooperation with the City of
Cape Town and the University of Cape Town (UCT). The project and

Studies and proposals for the Masterplan of Bharatpur, in cooperation
with the DED, and the Nagar Palika Bharatpur, students of landscape
architecture are also invited to participate. The project and study

2003: Study trip to Mexico City (Spanish required). Research
on the roles and functions of NGOs in the housing delivery system,
joint workshop with representatives of NGOs, networks and CBOs in
cooperation with the UNAM Postgraduate Housing Studies,
led by MA Alexander Jachnow.

2003: Study trip to Shanghai, workshop on housing and urban
conservation in Yangzhou, in cooperation with the China Eco City
Development Program (GTZ) and the Tongji University Shanghai. Organized
by Prof. Dr. Herrle, GTZ and Tongji University.

on „Informal Housing” in Damascus in cooperation with
the Faculty of Architecture, University of Damascus. Organized by
