Housing Solutions for Mumbai

Based on knowledge gained in field research in Mumbai the students are expected to develop design proposals for the area Oshiwara II in Northern Mumbai. This is an area for the resettlement of pavement dwellers.
While basic context variables such as the SRA, local building regulations and standards as well as the financial models underlying the SRA programs are fully accepted, proposals shall be designed in a way that they cater for the specific needs, life styles and requirements of urban poor households. Emphasis shall be placed on urban design elements such as building and open space typologies rather than on building construction. The result shall reflect the social and economic patterns revealed in field studies and translate these into physically, economically and functionally appropriate urban environments served with modern infrastructure and all necessary facilities. In particular, the following aspects shall be considered:
- preference to "low-rise high-density solutions" utilizing the maximum use of FSI available,
- overall layout and usage of open space and appropriateness of housing arrangements,
- use of open space for productive and commercial activities, communication, children, consideration of hierarchies of open spaces,
- inter-relationship with formal enterprises and middle income groups,
- flexibility of design elements (corridors, flats, open spaces).
