1-Semester Studio cum Seminar: Transforming Space: From Church to Multi-cultural Community Center in Berlin-Neukölln
The Ananias church building and parish hall in Neukölln are to be traferred into new center for the multi-cultural neighborhood which ranks lowest in the Berlin social index. The project aims at producing ideas for the re-use and and adapted design of the former church premises considering urban conservation issues, cultural diversity, community concepts as well as living conditioins in the surrounding neighborhood. Teh project also includes a dialogue with residents, civic groups,
and religious leaders to allow for a participative planning process.

1-Semester-Seminar:
Urban Paradigms – Foundations and Current Topics in International Urbanism
Based on the lecture series „Global City – Local Space. Urbanization Trends and Prospects“, this seminar will deepen the understanding of key issues and tendencies in urban development on an international scale. Throughout the seminar, different topics (urban theory, urbanization trends, globalization, informality, planning theory, urban poverty, housing and sustainability) will be addressed based on selected academic readings and discus- sions about relevant positions in the international debate. Students are demanded to actively participate in discussions and contribute with presentations and group work.
Teachers: Bettina Bauerfeind with Prof. Dr. Sonja Nebel
Second part of a 2-semester Project:
Changing Climate – Shifting Culture. Part 2
When addressing sustainable architecture and urban design, an emphasis is usually made on efficiency and performance, regarding specific parameters
referred to fixed standards. The cultural components related to these in a context of shifting climate conditions and growing human demands have not been
sufficiently problematized. This Seminar will attempt a re-consideration in three lines: human perception and
comfort; traditional construction patterns; and contemporary architecture paradigms.
Based on the dicussions in summer semester 2011, a design seminar is offered for the winter term, elaborating on these topics
in design projects. The results of this work will be submitted to the Archi-World Academy Competition 2011-2013Teacher: Renato d'Alencon MA
Research Paper in Urbanism and Urban Design
Based on readings of urban design concepts, knowledge should be gained to start a preliminary research ending with an academic paper. The aim is to constitute a research landscape including knowledge of urban design research strategies and methods of data collection, as well as to reflect on individual topics and systemic working processes for the master thesis in the dual urban design program.
