Students of the Habitat Unit contribute to the "FESTIVAL ÜBER LEBENSKUNST" organized by the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (House of World Cultures) from 17-21 August 2011.
Für das Festival ÜBER LEBENSKUNST verwandeln Künstler, Wissenschaftler und Aktivisten das Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) 101 Stunden lang in einen Ort, an dem Besucher aller Altersgruppen nachhaltige Lebenskunst erproben können, die Lebensgenuss und aktives Handeln miteinander verbindet – vom regionalen Frühstück am Haus über Workshops, Gespräche, Installationen, Exkursionen bis hin zur Übernachtung in temporären Nachtherbergen. Diese temporären Nachtherbergen im Park und im Hof wurden im Projektseminar im Sommersemester 2011 geplant und von den Studierenden gebaut.
May 15 through May 30, 2011: Workshop with 13 Urban Design Students from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg at the TU Berlin
Unter Leitung von Prof. Paul Kotze nimmt eine Gruppe von 13 Urban-Design-Studenten der University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg an einem Workshop zum Thema „Sustainable Development of Urban Brownfield Sites – the Case of the Oberspree River in Berlin“ teil. Der Umgang mit innerstädtischen Brachflächen wird anhand von städtebaulichen Szenarien diskutiert. Das Planungslabor „Urban Laboratory (U-LAB)“ stellt den Rahmen für das geplante Kompaktseminar dar. Es wird den Studierenden einen direkten Austausch mit Akteuren aus der Planungspraxis verschaffen und so erste Ideen und Ansätze überprüfen.
January 15 through February 15, 2011: Prof. Dr. Claudio Várquez Zaldívarré visits the Habitat Unit
Prof. Vásquez holds a master degree in Architecture from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and a Doctor en Arquitectura from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona. During his visit he evaluates and further develops the double degree in architecture (jointly offered by TU and PUC). The exploration of perspectives for joint research and technology transfer is also on his agenda.
Studienreformprojekt: "Urban Research & Design Laboratory"
Die TU hat zum WS 2010/11 die Einrichtung des Studienreformprojektes "Urban Research & Design Laboratory" an der HABITAT UNIT beschlossen. In Zusammenarbeit mit externen Akteuren werden im Planungslabor integrative Lehrformen erprobt, die Studierende auf die Komplexität der realen Handlungsfelder vorbereiten und Projektarbeit für Städte und Kommunen leisten. Das Studienangebot ist offen für Studierende der Masterstudiengänge Architektur, Urban Design, Stadtplanung und Landschaftsarchitektur.

Prof. Francisco Prado from PUC at the Habitat Unit
Within the ongoing cooperation with the Pontifica Universidad Católica de Chile Prof. Francisco Prado is visting the Habitat Unit from January 26 through February 9, 2010 along with two of his students. He holds a masters in 'Refurbishment and the Rehabilitation of Architectural Heritage'. His visit is part of a joint research project on "Carriers od Space Patterns and Construction Types: architecgture and German Migration in Chile 1853-1875".

The purpose of the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture is to honour annually five living architects who move towards sustainability.
Prof. Dr. Margarita Greene from PUC at the Habitat Unit
Within the ongoing cooperation with the Pontifica Universidad Católica de Chile Prof. Dr. Margarita Greene is visting scholar at the Habitat Unit from October 4 through October 30, 2009. She is a qualified Architect, holds a master degree in sociology and a PhD from the University College London. She is both a practising architect and has been a consultant to national and international organizations in the field of housing and urbanism. Dr. Sonja Nebel, senior researcher, teacher and core staff member of the Habitat Unit for many years, is taking office as a full professor for urban planning and architectural design at the German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) on January 1, 2009. We thank Sonja for her invaluable contribution to our activities and profile and wish her a successful start in her new position.
The Habitat Unit has been awarded a research grant from DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft)
for a project on "The Significance of Ernst Boerschmann for Cultural Transfer: Reception and Impact of his Research between 1902 and1949 on Traditional Chinese Architecture". Project start: February 2009. Abstract.

Call for Application extended: Student Competition and Workshop in Damascus, Syria:
Damascus is this year’s cultural capital of the Arabic world. For this reason Damascus University has invited Habitat Unit to a workshop and design competition which is partly funded by DAAD. The workshop will focus on urban visions, scenarios and concepts for Damascus in the year 2025. The study trip is part of a semester project. There are few places still available for participation. André Alexander, alumni of the Urban
Management Master Program of the TU Berlin, founder and chairman
of the Tibet Heritage Fund, has been granted the Dubai
International Award for Best Practices to Improve the Living
Environment in October 2006 for the Leh Old Town Project. The award
was issued by the Dubai Municipality and the United Nations Human
Settlements Program.

Dr. Nguyen Manh Hoang from Hanoi Architectural University,
Vietnam, has joined the Habitat Unit as visiting scholar for one
year. His work is on the German experience in socially inclusive
urban conservation and the rehabilitation of prefabricated housing
from the socialist era. His stay is funded by the government of
Vietnam.

The ASA
Program organizes 3-month work and study trips for young people
from Germany and other European countries in Africa, Asia, Latin
America and Southeast Europe. Various projects in the field of urban
development have been suggested for 2005. One of these has been
proposed by Habitat Unit in collaboration with the Development Action
Group in Cape Town. Project activities have been scheduled for summer

Francis Diébédo Kéré is one of the winners
of the prestigious 2004
Aga Khan Award for Architecture with an elementary school in
Gando, Burkina Faso. The school has been built with the active participation
of the Gando villagers.

Prof. Dr. Ghassan El-Badwan from the University of Damascus, Syria
joins the Habitat Unit as a visiting scholar for one year. His teaching
and research work is focussed on the political and cultural impacts
on contemporary architecture and urban development in Libanon, Syria
and Jordan. His stay is funded by the DAAD.

Prof. Dr. Eman Mohamed Eid Atiah, visiting scholar for 3 months
from the Menoufia University, Egypt has joined the Habitat Unit.
