Global Cities - Local Space: Urbanization trends and prospects (Prof. Herrle)
The Habitat Unit offers a series of lectures on basic aspects of contemporary urbanization and related development issues. Topics include:
- global and regional demographic and economic trends
- city typology and urban forms
- impacts of globalization: global cities and megacities
- informal housing, slums and squatter settlements
- informal economies, employment patterns and networks
- sustainablility aspects of urban development
- housing and urban planning strategies
- action area planning and strategic planning
- the role of international cooperation, key institutions and their positions: UN Habitat, The World Bank, The Cities Alliance, GTZ, KfW, NGOs. 

Lectures will be open to all students of School VI Planning-Building-Environement. However, participation is mandatory for students of the Urban Management Master Program and the Urban Design Master Program. Together with the tutorial offered in parallel, these lecture series provide the knowledge base recommended for seminars and projects at the Habitat Unit.

A tutorial on special aspects complementing the lectures will be offered in each winter semester.
