This exhibition presents results of an ongoing research cooperation between the Pontifica Universidad Católica de Chile in Santiago and the Habitat Unit. It explores the direct migration of architectural concepts and house types to Chile during the late 19th century.

The Habitat Unit is involved in three events during the 'Long Night of Sciences" which takes places at all Berlin universities on May 28, from 5pm - 1am.

Anupama Kundoo is architect, planner and researcher with a focus on sustainable building technology. In March 2008 she conducted a 1:1 hands-on building workshp developing a prototype house with TU Berlin students in South India. Her presentation will reflect on the lessons learnt by the experiment in 'baked-in-situ earth construction' following a tehnology pioneered by Ray Meeker.

Günter Meinert is Senior Urban Specialist with the Cities Alliance, Washington and senior staff member at GTZ Dept. 42. Prof. Meinert is one of the initiators of the Urban Management Masters Program at the TU Berlin and will primarily teach in this program.

Mud House in Pondicherry, India"
This prototyp house follows a technology poineered by Ray Meeker
to bake life-sized mud houses insitu. Houses are stabilized by converting
them to ceramic, thereby making them water restistant and lasting.

Symposium on Urban Governance in Latin America organized by
the Heinrich Böll Foundation and the Habitat Unit. The event
compares experiences in citizens’ participation in German
and Latin American cities and discusses the challenge of fragmentation
and segregation. Speakers include Dr. Paula Santos from Brazil,
Ana Sugranyes, Chief Secretary of the Habitat International Coalition
as well as representatives from German municipalities and universities.
The event is hosted by the Heinrich Böll Foundation.

Study visit by the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg
to Berlin. A group of MSc Housing students from the University
of the Witwatersrand is visiting the Habitat Unit. A workshop on
“Housing Finance and Law” will be held together with
Berlin students. Habitat Unit, Faculty VI, and Wits are cooperating
since 2000. Workshop and study trip are organized by Prof. Marie
Huchzermeyer and Astrid Ley, Habitat Unit. The event is partly funded
by the DAAD.

Cross Boundary Planning and Regional Development

region around Skutari Lake. Students of the three participating

development. Topics of the summer school vary from improving economic
conditions by sustainable tourism to developing case studies.

Welt – Globalisierung, Urbanisierung und Internationale Politik"
Eine Veranstaltung des
Auswärtigen Amtes in Kooperation mit dem Deutschen
Städtetag, der GTZ und der Habitat
Unit der TU Berlin. 6.-7. April 2006 im Konferenzzentrum des
Auswärtigen Amtes, Berlin.
Die Entwicklung eines Landes, die Gestaltung der bilateralen und
multilateralen Entwicklungszusammenarbeit wird zunehmend von den
Potentialen der urbanen Zentren bestimmt; in globaler Perspektive
hat dies auch Konsequenzen für die Verwirklichung der UN-Millenniumsziele.
Ziel des Forums Globale Fragen ist es, sich mit der Stadt als Resultat
wie auch als Gestalter des globalen Wandels auseinanderzusetzen.

Summer School "Berlin Spreebogen": In cooperation with the Berlin
Senate, the Queensland University of Technology Brisbane and the
University of New South Wales in Sydney the Habitat Unit organizes an
international summer school from 23 June to 9 July. Under the guidance
of Australian and German teachers 22 students from Australia and 10
students from the TU Berlin develop concepts for the so called “Forum”
of the “Band des Bundes” and the extension of government buildings
into the eastern “Luisenblock”.

Professor Hong Bae Kim from the Hanyang University in
Seoul, Korea explores the urban development implications of the shift
of the German government from Bonn to Berlin. He has been granted a
one-month scholarship by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).

Dr. Jeong Soo Lee from the Chungnam National University,
Daejon, South Korea is visiting professor at the Habitat Unit for 3
months. His research focuses on policies for the rehabilitation of
multi-storey housing in Germany. His stay is funded by the Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).

d’Architecture et Urbanisme) Algiers is visiting the Habitat Unit. A
workshop on “Urban conservation” will be held together with Berlin
students. A cooperation between Habitat Unit, Faculty VII and EPAU
