Algeria | EPAU École Polytechnique d'Architecture et Urbanisme, Algier
Since 2003 both institutions cooperate in joint study projects and field work on urban conservation and heritage management combined with case studies in Algiers and Cherchelle.

Egypt | MIU Misr International University, Department of Urban Planning, Cairo
Since 2003 there have been joint projects on urban conservation in the historic center of Cairo. Cooperation also included joint research on Architecture and Identity.

South Africa | University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), Johannesburg
There is a close cooperation since 2000 with the School of Architecture and Planning in the field of housing and on issues of socially inclusive urban development. It involves visits of students and staff in both directions. Common workshops and fieldtrips have been organized in 2001, 2002 and 2006. In May 2007 Prof. Marie Huchzermeyer with a group of MSc Housing students from the University of the Witwatersrand visits the Habitat Unit. A workshop on “Housing Finance and Law” will be held together with Berlin students. In 2007 a formal cooperation agreement will be signed. It is also envisioned to develop a Dual Master Program in Urban Design.

South Africa | UCT University of Cape Town, Cape Town
Collaboration with the School of Architecture, Planning and Geomatics at UCT has started in 2004 with a visit of 15 German students to Cape Town. Prof. David Dewar of UCT and Barbara Southworth of the City of Cape Town invited Habitat Unit staff to a project on upgrading of public spaces in Cape Town.

Syria | Technical University Damascus
There have been close contacts to the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning for many years. Activites include visits of staff and students and joint projects including diploma projects.

Syria | University of Aleppo
Through the Aleppo Urban Conservation Project supported by GTZ there have been close contacts to Aleppo University for many years. Activites include visits of staff and students in both directions, joint field work and diploma projects typically on urban conservation related topics.

Turkey | ITÜ Istanbul Technial University
There is a longstanding cooperation on various levels involving student exchanges and joint supervsion of PhD projects on informal urban development in Istanbul.
