"Before participating in the Urban Management Master Course I used to work in urban planning projects for the municipalities of different Colombian cities. The Urban Management Master Course caught my attention because of its emphasis on developing countries. From my point of view, this was the opportunity not only to deepen my knowledge in urban planning theories, but also to participate in debates about 'development challenges' in an international context.
The Master Course gave me invaluable academic and personal skills, which I am applying now in my new job in Colombia. I am working as a consultant in the municipality of Cali, where I feel that I am contributing as a professional with a broader perspective. I am working in the same field I wrote my Masters thesis about. With this experience I can assure that, on our way towards development, our cities definitely need people who take the risk of joining academic knowledge with the daily challenges of managing a city."

"After my Urban Management Msc graduation in Berlin I was offered a job opportunity that I was always looking for in the public sector of my city, Sao Paulo. The most valuable knowledge I need for my work in the sector of ‘Social Comunication in Urban Interventions’ is certainly that of participation methodologies. The UM course offered me the capacity to develop my skills in the field of participatory planning and now I am part of a technical team aiming to improve what is often lacking on the public level: To listen and embrace community ideas on urban intervention."

"Presently I am working at the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ)- Bangladesh as an “Urban Governance Expert”. GIZ in Bangladesh is implementing a program named ‘Good Urban Governance’ aiming to improve governance at the municipal level in Bangladesh. I am working as a team member in the good urban governance program and contribute my knowledge that I learned from the Urban Management course.
Studying Urban Management at the TU Berlin was one of the most cherished experiences of my life. I appraise this as one of the best choices I took in my educational as well as professional career. The course enabled me to acquire comprehensive knowledge in urban planning and management. The most important achievement during my studies was that this course has given me an opportunity to exchange the lessons learnt with the other students from different countries around the world."

"I recently got an offer for a PhD position at the Development Planning Unit (DPU) at the University College London. The central purpose of my research will be to understand the effects of natural disasters on infrastructure (transportation and communication) and how these effects can disturb global economy. This research project emerged from my Masters thesis at the Urban Management Masters Program in Berlin, when I understood the importance of research in order to tackle urban issues."

"A strong and global network is very important for my job in one of local governments in Indonesia. On decentralization, any local government has to act locally but think globally, improve its knowledge beyond the border and out of the box. The Urban Management Program with its international experts and best practices, lead me to be part of this international network, which contributes not only to my own work but also to that of my colleagues and the local government itself. "After working for four years as a young planning consultant on economic development and poverty alleviation projects across South Africa, I recognised the urgent need for fresh ideas in confronting the serious challenges facing cities and regions in the Developing South. The Urban Management Masters Course enabled me to see these challenges in a new light, and from a truly global perspective. I look forward to applying my new-found perspectives and methods in my new post as senior professional officer in the Spatial Planning Department in the City of Cape Town, supported by a global network of fellow urban practitioners cultivated during the course of my studies."

"After completion of my bachelor studies in Urban Planning in India, I did my master’s in Urban Management at TU Berlin. I consider this as one of the best choices I took in my career. The masters course not only strengthened my theoretical knowledge in various fields in Urban Management but also helped me in providing very good contacts which elated my career to a different level.
For the last 2 years I am working at the Department of Sustainable Urban Habitat of the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) in New Delhi, India. As a part of the team I currently support 6 Urban Local Bodies in the planning, implementing, capacity building, operating and maintaining various urban infrastructure projects such as solid waste management, water supply, sewerage and storm water management under the National Urban Renewal Mission of the Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India."

"Studying in Urban
Management Master of TU Berlin was one of the most valuable
experiences I have ever had in my life. The University
has a very good credibility and particularly the course
allowed me to exchange the lessons learned within the
scope of Urban Management (Environmental Management,
Policy, Urban Planning, etc) with people from many countries
all over the world.
At the moment I am working as a consultant for GTZ
(German Agency for Technical Cooperation) in a program
called Paklim (Policy Advise for Environment and Climate
Change). The focus area of my task is to work and coordinate
closely with the Central Government of Indonesia and
Industry in several cities in Indonesia within the framework
of Climate Change Mitigation Action.
In the near future, I hope I can continue my PhD back
in Europe. The expected focus research would be on the
setting up Voluntary Partnership Agreement scheme between
the Private sector and Public Sector (applicable for
central or even municiplaities) in order to be able
to fulfill the commitment of Indonesian Government of
its emission reduction."

"After gaining
work experience in urban, rural and regional planning
in Costa Rica, I decided to move on, to enlarge my theoretical
and critical knowledge, aiming to bridge the ever lasting
gap between theory and practice. Hence, I settled in
Berlin and joined the Urban Management Master Course,
in which I not only found great opportunities to widen
my theoretical background, but also it provided me with
excellent practical experiences. Furthermore, I made
very good friends and learnt a great deal about best
practices, challenges and successful experiences in
other geographical and cultural contexts through the
input of my classmates.
Currently I am working at INPOLIS a
firm based in Berlin that offers urban professional
services. Mainly dealing with international projects,
this work experience has allowed me to apply my acquired
knowledge in new fields, such as City Marketing and
Place Branding, at both a theoretical and practical
level. I have also been involved in smaller local projects
in the frame of city management and cultural tourism,
where I could make use of urban management principles
and ideas obtained during my studies.
I am looking forward to continue with
my Ph.D. research in the field of participation and
the opportunities to foster ‘bottom–up’
schemes in territorial planning, by understanding and
decoding the functional logics of locally based organization,
put together by the people themselves, in the frame
of social contestations and struggles."

"I
found my interest in Waste Management during my Master
Course in the Urban Management Studies Program at the
TU Berlin. More specifically my interest in Waste Management
is related to the city and climate change. The program
offered me the chance to learn about the various urban
management fields and to find the right field for me.
Besides the Studies the course gave me the chance to
experience living independently and having wonderful
friends from diverse backgrounds from all over the world.
Working in these different atmospheres were some of
the greatest experiences for me. This is an amazing
opportunity and I can only say one should take it, especially
women from developing countries.
Currently I am continuing
my study on PhD-level at the Institute for Environmental
Technology and Energy Economic (IUE), Hamburg University
of Technology and joining the Bioconversion and Emission
Control Group. There I am working on waste management
modeling, the so-called
Decision Support Tool (DST) on
the direction of a Low Carbon Eco-City."

"During the “Urban
Management” Master program, energy and its applications
on an urban level was the study field that captured
my interest. I chose to work on sustainability, solar
energy and public buildings during my master thesis.
After my thesis I decided that I would like to proceed
with my studies and find a PhD in this direction. I
am currently working on my PhD with the title “Energy
efficiency and management techniques in sports facilities”
at the Faculty VI of the TU Berlin. Energy efficiency
and management has recently emerged as a major consideration
in the design of high-performance, sustainable and green
buildings. I am confident that this new scientific research
which prioritizes sustainability and energy efficiency
issues, which was one of the main themes in the UM Masters
degree, will serve as a turning point for my future
career and life."

organized crime, corruption, terrorism, illegal migration
and trafficking, as well as on the security culture
in relation to Romania's European and Euro-Atlantic

"Prior to taking
the Urban Management course, I was working as a journalist
specializing in urban issues for The Jakarta Post, an
English-language newspaper in Indonesia. Moving away
from the classic hard news reporting to more in-depth
ones, one needs a macro understanding of what is going
on in cities, in developing countries globally. Such
perspective could very much be gained through the UM
masters' course, from the intensive exchange of knowledge
with teachers and especially colleagues coming from
different countries. The learning process takes place
inside and outside of class, through discussions on
global urban issues at different local contexts."

"After working
in the field of environmental engineering in China,
I decided to take part in the ‘Urban Management’
Masters course, with an aim of solving environmental
problems on a higher level. After my graduation, I started
working in a carbon trading company in Potsdam, Germany,
which provides CDM financing and consultation service
in Germany.
As we all know, our earth is facing an unprecidented
global warming and climate change. In the future, the
international society will have to pay more attention
on better urban management, i.e. on energy efficiency
and management, green local government, public transportation,
public-private partnership with local business. All
of these topics were covered in the UM course, which
gives me a good over-view to think about climate and
governance issues."
